The Off Road Buggy First Concept Takes Shape
His first concept took shape in modifying a Kombi bus with wide rims (he calls it the "Little Red Riding Bus") and using his expertise in boat building he designed the first fiberglass bodied off road buggy. Although mostly fun for him, an untapped industry soon took shape around one man’s idea.
The first 12 cars Bruce produced were all-fiberglass with “monocoque” bodies with a steel structural frame inside the fiberglass shell attached to the VW suspension and running gear. Although these cars were expensive for their time, they were also unique in that so much of the VW was thrown away.
After redesigning the body to fit on a shortened VW frame ended up reducing the cost of these fun new vehicles. Not long thereafter, the Meyers Manx became one of the most sought after off road buggy styles of all time.
Off Road Buggy Demand Grew Practically Overnight
This took the country and consumers by storm with magazines like Hot Rod and Car & Driver featuring the unique and new fiberglass car on their covers. This initially spawned a frenzy of more than 300 orders. Although not able to fill all these orders alone, soon manufacturers opened their doors practically overnight and ended up producing more than 250,000 off road buggy designs, look-a-likes and near look-a-likes to the Meyers Manx.
After several years of this new found craze, more than 300 companies globally, began to produce copies of the Manx in one form or another. Most notably, even the copiers copied each other! Bruce did what he could to stop the flood of knock offs violating patent infringement laws but ultimately failed to convince the judge he had produced anything worth a patent.
In the years to follow B.F. Meyers & Co. built at least 5,280 Manx kits, several hundred Manx 2's, around 1,000 Meyers Tow’ds, a couple of hundred Manx SR’s and 75 Resorters - a total of nearly 7,000 kits. Not bad for an idea one man had for something more fun and efficient to enjoy off road buggy activities to the fullest.
